A criminal conviction can impact your employment, education, and ability to travel. Two remedies may be available.

A record suspension separates your conviction from the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database. Your criminal record is not erased, but is kept separate and apart from other criminal records. Eligibility depends on the type of offence and the length of your sentence.

American border officials have discretion over entry to the United States — common grounds of inadmissibility include crimes of moral turpitude, multiple convictions, or drug offences. It is possible to apply for a waiver of your inadmissibility to the U.S., which grants you advance permission to travel for a specified period, though the process can take more than a year.
