If you’ve been accused of a criminal offence in relation to your current or former romantic partner, this is labelled a domestic allegation. Domestic charges are treated specially within the Canadian criminal justice system due to the government’s acknowledgement that there is a systemic problem of abuse against domestic partners across the country.
Those accused of domestic offences may find themselves with more stringent bail conditions and, by nature, may find even standard bail conditions to be more onerous as they are often separated from their families and their home. Unfortunately, while your charges are pending before the court, there is very little recourse for you to amend your terms to have contact with your partner or for you to return home if your partner is still residing there.
