The Youth Therapeutic Court is a specialty court available in London for youth under the age of 18 years old who have been charged with a criminal offence and who have a diagnosed or suspected mental illness, traumatic brain injury, and/or developmental disability. The goal of this court is to identify and support the mental health needs of youth involved with the justice system. The process can be quite lengthy and involves screening, assessment, and a therapeutic approach to resolving the charges which can include diversion from the formal justice system. Often, a treatment plan is developed and followed over a period of several months. Participation in the program is voluntary and requires a joint effort between the youth, their family or care providers, and various mental health care workers.
